There’s a lot of talk about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) lately. It’s like it’s the second coming of Jello Pudding Pops — everybody’s just gotta have one. And as with most Internet things, where the buzz is, businesses have sprung up to meet the “need.” All these businesses need clients, so they set about creating more need.
Here’s the deal: if you get ranked really high on Google or one of the gazillions of other search engines that wish they were Google, you’ll get tons of traffic to your site. Which means tons of sales, right? Maybe — but maybe not. Maybe you’ll just look foolish to a lot of people.
Point is, there’s a balance between quality and quantity on your site. Provide real value to users — better prices, better service, better products, a more interesting user experience — and they’ll become your customers. Drive a horde of people to a terrible site and you’ll just get a lot of hits. On the other hand, design a whiz-bang site that no one ever sees and you’ll have the opposite problem.
