Lookin' Old

When do you need to redesign your Web site? If it’s doing it’s job — that is, if it is easy to use and the right information and services are accessible and provide value to you and your customers, you should be fine, right?

Maybe.

Some Web sites just look dated. They might function fine, and have up-to-date information on them, but they just feel out of date. As design trends change, some things that were cool in the past start to reek. Examples: if your site uses a non-stop news crawl, or Flash intros, or unexpected sounds, you might be getting over the hill.

Take my Home Page, for example. Does it seem dated to you? It does to me, but then maybe I’m just tired of seeing it. The design is over three years old, and it might last a while longer before it’s embarrassing. On the other hand, I’ll probably never know who looked at my site, thought this one’s ancient, and moved on. Maybe it’s embarrassing now, and I just don’t realize it.
Normally, I don’t advocate for redesigning Web sites just to “look more modern.” However, it can be a factor in the decision.
